REFLECTING ON All Saint’s (& All Soul’s Day)…
Around the world, on the 1st & 2nd of November, Christians will celebrate All Saints Day & All Soul’s Day respectivily. In the Anglican tradition, this celebration will take place on the Sunday before or after.
The two feast days are so closly related that in Anglican churches they are often celebrated together. In the two days we celbrate that great ‘cloud of witnesses’ (both living and departed) who have led us to faith, helped stregthen us when we struggled, and with whom we rejoiced to share the blessings God has bestowed upon us.
We remember all those loved ones who have now departed this life in faith, and rest in God’s love. In our reading from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians (1.11-23) we are reminded that our inheritance with the communion of saints is greater than death. We are unified in Christ’s love through his resurrection. We may mourn those we see no more, but we also remain connected to them in his triumph over death.
It is important that we celebrate these two aspects of these feast days (All Saints/All Souls), because they remind us that we are part of a much greater reality and vision than just our day to day earthly existence, which one day will pass away.
But the love and hope founded in Christ will never pass away. It is this that will at last bring us home.
Blessings, Fr Ron.
